What is the statute of limitations to sue a landlord for illegaly disposing my furniture?

He held on to my deposit of $4700 then took me to court saying I owe him $5700. After telling the judge he held on to the security she deducted it but when I told her that he threw out my furniture so I feel that I don't owe him anything. He's currently garnishing my check.
